Arm / Legwarmers sliding down :(

Anastasia Mon, July 9, 2007 - 1:26 PM by Anastasia

Does anyone have any helpful ideas of how to keep those bloody legwarmers from sliding down all night? I have used elastic before and it isn't comfortable for very long and I am not really fond of garter belts. As far as armwarmers they sometimes slide down into bracelets. Please help me divert a fashion emergency with some ideas!
Thanks

Hmmmm I know that www.sockdreams.com sells sock-garters.
Don't know if that would work for you.

What I did for my bootcovers is half elastic and half ribbon. So that I can tie and adjust them over the course of the night.

maybe for the armwarmers make some kind of string that connects them through your back- like you did with mittins as a kid.

Hmm.....I am getting an idea to how it might work. I have the same problem and thought I was alone in the aggravation.

i have a pair of armwarmers that like to slide down and i use one slightly stretched-out ponytail elastic hair band on each arm, just slid on right over the sleevie above my elbow. they're black and i use black hair bands, so they don't show at all, and the ones i use are a little stretched out already, so they don't cut off the circulation. you could also get a soft, stretchy elastic and sew or safety pin it inside the sleevie, a couple inches from the top, so it doesn't show.

for my furry legwarmers, i use a drawstring instead of elastic - i find it works much better! also i try to make them in a length and width to fit right over my boots, so the top of the boot keeps them up and in place. i just pull the drawstring into a little knot or bow, and there are little furry pompoms on the ends of the drawstring that bounce around in back, for added cuteness.

Thats it Emily. Exactly what I was thinking. It is a project I probably definitly want to figure out after BM. I have to learn to sew first.

lol My son HATES! that string... but it is a necessity, you could do something fun with it thought, make it into some kind of shoulder garter/harness thingy. hmmmmmm I might have to try that!

since I'm not particularly skinny, I'm not as familiar with the problem y'all are describing ;- )

but, Sophie's comment reminded me of some arm warmers that a skinny friend of mine made (I don't think I could pull it off -- or on-- though...)

she took a pair of fishnet pantyhose and cut a hole in the crotch, and she pulls them on like a sweater. The waist band ends up around her ribcage (under her breasts), and the hole is big enough that the arm-warmers are kind of off-the shoulder numbers. Sounds kinda strange, but looks pretty bitchin'

I think you probably want to start out with a smaller hole than you think you'll need-- I think the fabric stretches quite a bit there because it's on the bias, and as they say, "you can always cut it bigger but you can't cut it smaller"!

I'm soooo going to try that with stripey panty hose!

Thanks for the tip!

When I lived in Japan, and yes it was 12 years ago now, there were arm garters sold for women whose sleeves are too long. Some were quite colorful and fancy, some were elastic, some were woven beads on elastic, some were like stretchy watchbands or hair scrunchies. Any chance we know some Japanese burners who can research this product?

Perhaps velcro?

My solution last year was to have an inner lining, made out of very stretchy material (lycra/nylon), that fit my limbs snugly and attached to the outer fuzzy layer at a couple points. The inner layer was sized specifically to my arms and legs, and provided a snug fit without being so tight as to impede circulation or cause any pinching. It kept my arm & leg warmers perfectly in place for hours at a time.

It's pretty easy to do, and isn't really much more work than an elastic or ribbon approach. You'll need to make a pattern based on your measurements at wrist and elbow (or ankle and knee). Then allowing for some stretch, cut out the liner from very stretchy material. There's only one seam to sew, really but be sure you use a stitch for stretchy fabrics. If it is too loose just re-sew the seam.

Once it fits nicely, place it into the outer sleeve, and use a few stitches at the ankle and elbow to attach the two layers. Do NOT sew the two completely together at the edges since that would defeat the purpose of having a stretchy inner liner.

This approach wouldn't work for sheer arm/leg warmers, since you'd see the liner.

Just a thought but you might want to try double stick tape.

www.hollywoodfashiontape.com/home.cfm

Probably not the most comfortable but it would help with the arm warmers especially. (Provided of course that everything isn't covered in dust)

... or slickery from perspiration and/or sunscreen. hard to imagine that this would suffice...

I've seen the stuff work and was pretty impressed with it's strength and resilience but at the same time I have no practical experience with it out on the playa. I'd be curious to hear if it does work out there.

For the brave of heart.
Rubber cement.

Put it at the top of the armwarmer, on the inside, and let it dry.
If it's snug enough, it'll help keep the fabric from sliding down your skin.
Or, rubber cement on the inside of your armband, with a garter of some sort for extra security.

Kinda like how the nicer no-slip thigh-highs work.

-the double lining thing sounds like it will work well so does velcro. This year I won't have to worry about having an unplanned fashion emergency.

Is it the difficulty in putting the garter belt together that you don't like? I hate those things for that reason. I have started to use magnets at the attachment points on them as well as on some of my other outfuts. its easy to get on and off, for both me, and my partner:) Also I have be experimenting with clips and small ribbon or rope as garter type attachments. basicly they look like roach clips on either end of the ribbon that attach to whatever location you want to hold up.

Toupee tape, I swear its all about toupee tape. You can generally get it at beauty and costume supply stores.

Its great for keeping things in place like skirts that like to twist, heavy metal armlets that would otherwise slide right down to the wrists, etc, etc, etc. It'll usually hold up arm warmers (I haven't tried it on legwarmers) depending a bit on the cloth.

No rubber cement... ouch!! Well, if you want to, go on, but...

I danced ballroom for years and eyelash glue is awesome for holding up the gloves I would wear. And good God did I sweat wearing those. Eyelash glue around the inner rim, apply to your skin, not the farbic. It stays on, and peels off. I don't know if it'll work out on the playa, but I know I swear like a mofo while I was dancing, and they never moved.

I have not yet tried this but we'll see how it goes today. For furry leg warmers I am going to create a zip in the back almost leather boot-ish phenomenon that is going to be slightly stiffly structured with duct tape-kind of like a shinguard. I am hoping that that will be stiff enough to keep it up. I'm going to sew and hot glue The fur to that structure. You could also buy an old pair of soccer shin guards and take out the stiffer material and then attach things to it. It would ready be constructed.

Arm warmer advice. Choose a fabric that is not too heavy-a.k.a. fishnet tights are great and cool looking. I had made xena like arm cuffs (they look cool and superhero like. They had a circle of elastic attached at one place to the inside of them and then also a tie on the outside. They are incredibly easy to make and you could make a couple pairs of different stretchiness. You just tuck the arm fabric into them but otherwise they are separate units and very easy to make. They held up great. Reuse leather is a great material because when it is tied it looks intentional and cool.
