Hi everyone
I just managed to score a nice fur lined suede coat at a thrift shop yesterday. I can deal with it the way it is (brown) but was wondering about changing it's colors. I was hoping to get the outside black and the fur white.
The tag says the outside is an acrylic/poly blend (62% acrylic) no info on the fur though. I was thinkning about the vinyl dye they sell for car interiors on the outside, but I figured I'd check with the experts here
Any hints? If Im going to fuck the coat up I'd rather not do anything, but I'd love to hear any options I have.

Re: dying a faux fur/fake suede coat
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 10:23 AMuhhh. no. it's difficult if not impossible to change something into two colours that's already made. How about thinking a bit differently and painting a cool pattern on the outside? A shoe repair place would have the paint specially formulated for shoes, and it's not all that expensive. Acrylics would probably have good adhesion, too... thin it a bit with some water.. or air brush.. or make stencils & use spray paint (light layers).... immersion dyeing, in this case, though.. far as I can figure.. is not an option. -

Re: dying a faux fur/fake suede coat
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 4:54 PMSorry, didn't mention that vinyl dye for car interiors comes in a spray can. I just thought it'd be a good option for the acrylic/poly mix cause I think that's what carpets in a car are.
I really love the idea of a pattern though. I play with electronics mostly, so that didn't even come to mind...
What about coloring the fur, I'm sure it's not really an option cause whatever I use will surely screw up the mat, but maybe someone know's something I don't... -

Re: dying a faux fur/fake suede coat
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 11:14 AMyou could try dip-bleaching the fur, just in household bleach, then rinse and hang to dry.
You could also use one of those clorox bleach pens, but it would take a DAMn long time. -

Re: dying a faux fur/fake suede coat
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 8:59 AMYour faux fur is NEVER going to be white, and bleach would probably eat the fur itself. Use some leather dye or spray to work on the outside, although real swede tends to soak up infinite amounts of dye, and poly/ acrylic will take none of the color you try to put on it, short of painting the outside, which will crack over time. I would say learn to love the color it is, or start attaching some fabric patches to change the color. -

Re: dying a faux fur/fake suede coat
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 10:08 AMSasha is SO right!
I have seen some peeps thin some acrylic paint and use that successfully on faux suede. But if you do anything at this late stage, your dye is just going to bleed onto everything else you own and onto everyone else's couches...
Dont' do it!
