The man burns in.... not very many days. 20-something?
Down to the wire, kittlings.
What are you making?
What's been your focus this year?
Any last-minute projects going on?
I'll be on the playa in 13 days.
Not really doing any big projects this year, but have completed most of my big sewing projects.
I've noticed that starting one project makes 3 others pop up.
This has been my year for obsessing over long ruffled skirts, and sort of bustling them up to be short in the front and gathered a bit/drapey-full in the back. Sort of can-can cabaret, sort of Amanda Palmer, 100% awesome. (And with an added EXTRA bit of rigging so I can bustle them up further to ride a bike in them!)
Also trying to be more realistic about daytime costumes..... no, I'm not going to suffer in the heat for fashion. Daytime will end up mostly being some variant of booty shorts, fishnets, tall boots and a tank top, with some attitude. mmm, comfortable.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Fri, August 14, 2009 - 9:53 PMI've just about finished everything up. Those skirts sound cute, picture??
Right there with ya on having wearable day wear that can easily become night wear. I took some little booty shorts and put some faux fur on the ends, quick, easy and they look like new. Got some thigh high socks from Target. If anyone is looking for cool cheap socks or tights go to Target, they're like $5!
Last year I made outfits for my boyfriend and I... took like 6 months. This year I only wanted to focus on one thing and made us playa coats. www.youtube.com/watch
I'm curious as to what everyone else has been doing, can't wait to get out there and see :) -

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Sat, August 15, 2009 - 12:10 PMMe, I'm trying to learn to put together decent outfits, something that can't happen in the last 20 days, more less the couple months I've been trying to figure it out! I'll get there with what I get there with...
BUT, in the meantime, I picked up the infamous McCalls M4222 at JoAnnes and am going to try to make a coat with the horrible fur selection that Rochester has, no time to mail order furs, I'll just have to make another one some other time, if I have the endurance to go to Black Rock a second time :)
Also spray painting some canes and motorcycle boots I got cheap, I'll paint them up some late night, need to think of some good detailing for those boots. And I need to attach 2 large christmmas icicles to a flimsy hat for horns, not sure how best to go about that STILL after thinking about it for... over a month? GAH! Too much to do, and too little time (and that doesn't include all the logistics of buying ESSENTIALS and planning the 2500 mile drive :) ).
I'll have to hit up target for some thigh-highs, thanks! Need to find more shoes too, gave away a pair I so want right now a while ago, figuring I'd NEVER wear them, but they'd go perfect with my plaid-mini :(
And that Coat is WAY BRIGHT! Very nice! -

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Sat, August 15, 2009 - 12:38 PMThanks! Target rocks. I love the idea of using the icicles as horns! Never really seen them up close, so I don't know if they have a flat bottom, but you might think of taking a headband and gluing them on there, then poking holes through the hat and no one would be the wiser.
What kind of shoes are you without? That totally always happens though, right after you get rid of something you need it. Hope you find some good ones

Sat, August 15, 2009 - 12:38 PM>need to think of some good detailing for those boots
Don't think too hard, boots will be absolutely coated in dust. Playa fashion tips usually say that "costuming happens from the ankles upward". Heh.
And re: fashioning icicles to hat-- might I suggest adhering a short screw to the bottom of icicle with pointy side out, shoving thru hat, and then having a washer/nut combo on the underside of hat to secure.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 10:02 AMSome advice with M4222 -- shorten the hood pattern piece and make it a little bit shallower. It's so deep you wind up looking like one of the Sand People from Star Wars (remember them? pretty much nothing but deeply hooded robes) when you try to wear it. -
-
Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 11:17 AMThanks for the tip! I'm going to have to lengthen the coat in general, so what's one more alteration when one really has no idea what they're doing :)
-
Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 3:57 AMWow, that hood WOULD be huge without cropping it! I didn't shorten it (I'm 6'1" and using the Medium pattern), but I definitely chopped off a good angle of the front to make it so it didn't hang down to my chin!
Thanks to 1/2 bottle of So Co, I stayed up all Monday night and finished it. Unfortunately, that meant Tuesday night, I got home from work and slept until now......
I have to start packing tonight! And I still have some costumy things to finish up! And I leave tomorrow! Anyone have a 'pause button' for time?

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Sat, August 15, 2009 - 12:46 PMOh! Also, re: projects.....
I grabbed a pair of light cotton pyjama pants from the thrift store, chopped them off at the knees, and then cut up the chopped-off fabric to make ruffles for the bottom of the remaining knee-length pants*. Works great to make some bloomers! I also used the ruffle from the bottom of a cruddy slip I found at the thrift store to attach to an existing pair of knee-length pants. Can you tell I'm digging the knee-length things-with-ruffles this year?
*to make the ruffle: take the tube of fabric, cut it vertically at a seam so you have a flat piece of fabric. Cut it in half horizontally (so it's twice as wide and half as tall), and sew those two pieces together end-to-end. Make the ruffle using your preferred method (basting along top & gathering the threads, or ruffling thru sewing machine with high tension) and then tack & sew onto the bottom of the pants.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 11:46 AMI found a very, very ugly utility belt at Goodwill. I convinced myself to buy it because I knew it could make it much cooler with very little effort. I covered up the pockets with orange duck tape, added some fur, and replaced the actual belt with a cheetah print belt. Perfecto!

Kinda reminds me of Wilma Flintstone... -

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 11:13 AMWow. That utility belt turned out so fun and bright and not very, very ugly at all. Nice renovation!
-
Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 5:47 PMLove the utility belt! Very festive :)
I also made some bloomers, but with a pair of pajamas with big, bright circles all over them and put a row of neon pink and green ruffled lace on the bottom (think Twister meets circus clown!) I think our costumes are pretty well set, unless I magically pull some time out of my ass and finish a few sewing projects for my hubby.
I'm also working on a small art piece that will be at our camp - a bicycle wheel mounted horizontally on a tall piece of rebar, with optical toys (view masters, kaleidoscopes, spy glasses) dangling from it.
That and getting all our supplies bought and packed. You know, the usual last minute scramble!

Tue, August 18, 2009 - 7:35 PM
:( my sewing machine broke, so i'm recycling the same stuff I made from previous years.
i did manage to make a short skirt with flannel lining over the winter before it broke tho...so that's the only "new" item this year.
I've been concentrating on carving stones..with penguins on them and the )*( symbol on the back....along with new el-wire bike decor, and papermache burnable penguins made from willow branches.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 6:31 AMI'm moving to Cali to date you, if things with punk rock boy don't work out. Amandapalmerismygirlfriend.
I'm not doing anything new for the playa...taking my ol' regional stand-bys. Too much other stuff to deal with.
I went to Joanne's last night to get some fur (FTPH!) and wandered around in circles, going "Oooo...I could do this this this and this...."
Next year...next year.
I do have a Dresden Dolls shirt I need to chop up, that I wanted to wear. And another tee that says "Hi Y'all" on the front and "Bye Y'all" on the back... -

PunkRockBoy and I have an open relationship. O HAI. (leer)
I met Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman recently, and all I could think was THIS WOULD BE THE BEST THREESOME EVER.

Fri, August 21, 2009 - 9:21 AMSadly, Im only getting to start on my hat today. I have no expectations that I will get it done in time for burning man.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Sat, August 22, 2009 - 1:18 PMI won't be going this year. So for me, the man burns in 379 days. Nevertheless, I am actually working on some things for next year. In fact, it's quite nice working without any pressure/time constraints. Since, in years past, I have put most of my time and effort into transportation and infrastructure (i.e. designing and building a shade structure & shower, and transforming some old bikes into playa cruisers), I am ready to concentrate more on clothing/costumes. I've dusted off my mom's old Singer sewing machine, and I took an basic sewing class at Craft Haven in SF. I will definitely be looking through the threads here for information and inspiration.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 9:49 AMI'm cutting t-shirts...creative cutting...and sewing...2 become 1...that sortof thing...i wish the days were longer, 24 hrs is just NOT enough!!! -

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Sun, August 23, 2009 - 8:45 PMI did a bunch of Playa shopping today.... tent stakes, tarp, air mattress, water bottle, solar lights, baby wipes, and bike decorations. I also went through all my costumes, figured out whats going and whats not, and washed a bunch of fur. I'm getting sooooo excited!!!

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:53 AMThe playa bikes are done, as is my small little art piece for in front of our camp. The costumes are pretty much done, with a few minor alterations and decorations to finish. We've gone through all the tubs and now I just have to go through the piles of stuff and put them in some order. Most of the food is bought and/or premade and frozen.
I'm feeling pretty good about prep, but I still wake up in the middle of the night with random thoughts like "Binder clips!" and "Don't forget tights!" I have a pad of paper on my nightstand this time of year. lol -

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 1:18 PMMy sewing machine isn't working, the epoxy I bought isn't holding the flowers to my bike, I can't find somebody to help me out and come spray paint the poor, rusty, chipped dear or cut out reflective stars for it, somehow I no longer fit into the girdle I've been working on...I can't find my unicorn beard or hands... /sigh -
-
Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 1:53 PMThat means it's time to sit back and have a drink.
I understand the girdle problem, spending all this time trying to sew things means less time cooking good dinners, which means eating poorly, and my skirts are getting tight :)

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 3:38 PMI have had this happen more recently myself. Im 26...not 13.....stop giving me puberty. :)
OH, and I have no idea where things are either. Its gonna be looksie time this week.

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 8:57 PM
zip tie the flowers to the bike....it's OK...they don't have to look perfect :)
deep breaths....you have a few days yet. You can do it!
stop, have a drinky, and slowly and methodically search for missing items.
good luck! :)

Re: So...whatcha doin'?
Tue, August 25, 2009 - 1:15 AMI sewed a deep red velvet cape with a hood! Yesterday I made a tutu out of two silver mylar emergency blankets. Its really flouncy and I love it!
