Where can I BUY stuff?

Hello! My name's Bodhi and I'm new to Tribe. However, this will be my third year at BM. Sometimes I'm at BM or at parties and I see people in cool clothes and I wonder where they got them. I know a lot of clothes are made by the wearer, but I figure they can't all be made because I'm not into sewing and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Does anyone know of any cool places or web sites where I can just BUY shit? I know some of it might be expensive, but that's OK. If it's not expensive, that's even better. I'm open to different prices ranges. I just need cool playa clothes and there's no way I'm going to make them for myself! Thanks!

I confess, I do buy things even though I sew. I get a lot of stuff from India and Egypt online. I'm fat, so I can't get the more exotic items locally in Northern Utah.

I love the Hot Topic clearance rack. ebay and etsy.com are good bets too. And there are always thrift shops. It all depends on what sort of "cool shit" you're looking for. Oh, and the links on icanhascheeburger (aka LOLcats) look fun.

Or keep an eye on the playa trading post tribe, sometimes people give away very nice things.

What did you have in mind?

I would recommend going to a Burner clothing swap rather than buying for the most part. You can get REALLY cool clothes--the very ones you see on people--and you are keeping with the spirit of Burning Man. Hell, you can even set UP a clothing swap in your area as a way to get some--that's what I did my first year and I got some amazing things. I put some of my more interesting stuff I didn't want in the swap and people took them happily, so it was a fair trade.

Just advertise on the Burner Tribes that you are having one such and such a date---especially on the Tribes that are specific to your area (where do you live and we'll hook you up with folks from your area). Wait until about two months or six weeks before the Burn--that's when people really start thinking about their wardrobe and getting rid of stuff they don't want anymore.

tribes.tribe.net/playatradinpost is a good Tribe to join. Then start asking. If you want something specific, ask--you never know who might see your post and say "I have one of those in my closet I never wear anymore--I'll send it to her." I got a $400 Dark Gardens corset for FREE that way. I just posted I was looking for a corset.

Mostly--haunt the thrift stores in your area--go back often and really be willing to spend time looking. I don't have any skill in sewing to speak of, so I wear things as they are--and have been very happy with the things I've found at thrift stores.

But other than some of the higher ticket items like coats (check out Lulie's stuff at www.lulievision.com/) you should be able to come up with some ROCKING clothes WITHOUT spending a cent--or at least--very little (and I actually got a full-length faux fur coat at a thrift store for $14 that I LOVE) . Remember--recycling includes clothing--and it's the Burner way!

It's funny, I was going to post a topic very similar to this.

I've been out at Burner events lately, and always seen a person or two in these AWESOME pants-- sort of stretchy-jersey cotton looking material, about pedal-pusher length (right below knee), with some ruffles at the bottom. (not huge fluffy ones, but just a ruffle or two of extra fabric). Not into making a pair, because stretch fabric SUUUUCKS to work with, and I don't have a serger, so.... anyone know a (local to SF, burner-friendly) company that sells these?

Brody.. if you use a zig zag stitch (or stretch stitch if your machine has it)... a ballpoint needle and reduce the presser foot tension, stretch fabric can become one of the easiest fabrics to sew on.. experiment on some old t=shirts or something.. & ya just might end up with something playalicious to wear at the end of it :)

S'true, I know this..... and I might resort to that. I am just not a very exacting kind of girl, I much prefer working with fabrics where it's not obvious I've fucked it up....ha. (FAUX FUR IS MY FRIEND). Thanks for the encouragement. :-)

My wife sells clothes/accessories on etsy
    CatChloeDesigns.etsy.com
She is in this tribe, and will make custom-made to order as well as the designs posted on the etsy website.
Her name on tribe is CatSpiracy (she is obviously on my friends list)
WE live in San Bernardino, not exactly local... but close enough to meet for fittings and such.

Whew! those sites are spendy! I personally hit up second hand stores, and keep and open mind, alter, combine, embellish items. Sewing is truly very easy. And fun!

Personally, I find A LOT of really awesome burner type stuff in the stripper stores on Hollywood Blvd, and it's not that expensive either. Lots of neon colors and shiny things. I find a lot of things there that I can mix and match and customize into really fab outfits that get a lot of positive feedback at burner events.

Also, I sometimes find good things at Crossroads Trading Co (not all the time, but sometimes), which is a chain of resale shops. Pricier than Goodwill, but much better quality.

American Apparel can also be useful, especially for basics to add on to/customize, since they sell a lot of basic garments in every imaginable color, including shiny metallics. (I'm totally in love with their silver lame hot pants).

A lot of the time, creativity with how you choose/combine/layer items, or wearing things in unexpected ways, can be even more important that an ability to sew.

You need to become a dedicated thrift store and flea-market shopper. Repurposing/recycling is definitely the Burner ethos, and I think the coolest outfits combine repurposed pieces/materials with outrageous out-of-box creativity. You don't need to be a super duper seamstress to make great outfits. Lots of Burners buy sewing machines and learn to sew when they realize that they just can't buy the cool stuff they've got in their heads cheaply enough to fit within their budgets.

The Haight has some great consignment/thrift shops, if you're up in the SF area. If you're there, you should hit New York Apparel, which has inexpensive fishnets, some light fetish wear, lingerie and stuff. You should also check out Socks Plus and My Diva's Closet, both on-line sites where you can find tights and fishnets and lingerie.

Layer enough of that with some key finds from flea markets and Goodwill, and you can amass some pretty fab outfits. The number of pieces of my Burner gear that I've actually made are relatively few (but then again, I'm a rabid Goodwill/flea market shopper).

Thanks HazMatt for the plug! muah!

He forgot to tell everyone that there's a 50% off burner discount on all my etsy prices. When you buy something from me, you're getting that recycled, reinvented, one of a kind, fur shreddings all over my livingroom floor objet d'art and you're helping one of your community artists.

I expanded that into the plural, because there are many indie designers in our community, and we need to support them by shopping, too! Miz Cherry Pie, Bet-C, and Jaq'd Wear instantly come to mind, not just my own FeraL catchloedesigns.etsy.com . And I noticed my friend Gitte just posted pics of her runway show for s and g clothing.

I hope this isn't spamming because I try to be very sensitive of that. Someone asked! is all I'm sayin'!

          love,

It's easy, while at Burning Man, strip naked, have someone paint on your front and back:

    "DRESS ME"

    It should work great!

Also--there are several camps that specialize in dressing folks on the Playa--check this year's theme camp listings. I've seen some outrageous stuff that people have gotten for free while on the Playa.

Here's the obligatory "you should make it yourself" comment.

        Why?

        Because it's fun!

I can't sew either, so I mostly tear things apart, put 'em together, and con friends into sewing for me.

          You don't have to sew.

          Staple. Glue. Rip and tie.

My dollar a pound thrift store is a kid's candy orgasm.

          Er, wait...

          :P

Seriously, last time I got TWO old prom dresses chock full o' tulle and crinoline, one turned into a sparkly top, and a skirt for one of my other outfits.

Skirts can be capes. Bathrobes can be playa coats. Sweater arms can be leg warmers. Etc.

I need to get my etsy.com back up and running!

    where do you live Bodhi?

I'm in LA... and I'm a big thrift store shopper. It's really kinda amazing what you can find at your local thrift store. I don't do the furry look (that would probably be pretty hard to find at a thrift store), but i'm made a few steam punk, firefly-ish, outfits from what i've found at thrift stores.

Hello! In addition to thrift stores and Lulie's stuff (I saw someone mention her- she's great, located in Santa Monica), try stripper stores. There are a ton in/around Hollywood and some of them have some unique and unexpected items. My favorite is on Hollywood Blvd, between Cahuenga and Highland. I think it's called Foreplay, but I'm not sure. They have all kinds of corsets, bathing suits, faux fur boot/shoe covers. I'm going shopping soon myself!

Seriously??? If you don't want to sew - find a seamstress and give directions. or tear apart or pin together items you find all around you. i swear, everyone has a bit of creativity if they just choose to look for it.

You know, Bodhi, there's no rule that says you HAVE to wear fancy clothes. If you're not into the sewing or the mix-n-match vintage, just wear shorts and a tank top.

        I agree, Anne.

The last time I went to Burning Man.. I lived in silk slips and large gauze scarves wrapped around my shoulders & head to help shield me from the sun... most comfortable I've ever been there..

& I'm a costume designer by trade.. so there ya go. nothing to live up to.. no expectations... just be comfy..

annnd.. is there something you've always wanted to wear, but it didn't feel right to wear it in the default world? Burning Man's the place for that :)

      >where I can just BUY shit? Seriously???

Damn, bit of an overreaction there, doncha think? What's the harm in supporting other people who make stuff? I wasn't aware that there was so much stridency around complete-and-utter-DIY. If someone has some money to throw around and wants to just buy some stuff, what's the harm? Do you make your own tent? What about your shoes? Do you make all your own blinkies with soldering wire and parts-and-pieces? Where do you draw the line?

I personally like to pick my projects. I make a lot of stuff, I buy some stuff from thrift stores, and (yes) I'll occasionally buy things outright. Gasp! There's just some stuff that I don't want to bother taking on, reinventing the wheel, learning a bunch of new skills for. Sometimes it's a better use of my time to just buy a thing and focus my energies on other projects.

        Hey, Brody:

I'm with you on this topic. I buy stuff, I thrift shop like a fiend, I make lots. Sometimes I'll buy a piece just to help me break the code on how it's made, so's I can try to make something like it myself.

Since I'm a costume designer too, I've felt the challenge, of late, to make sure EVERYTHING I'm wearing in an outfit is made by me. But the one neon yellow peignoir I made came out like CRAP and I'm a picky picky girl. So the one I picked up off the lingerie rack at TJMaxx stays in for now.

But I'm lucky with enough of a steady income to where I can afford to buy some stuff. What I love to see is when someone arrives on the scene and initially goes out there to buy stuff, and then, over time, gets the itch to express themselves more personally through their attire. That's when the creative spirit starts to burn from within. Ohhh YEAHHH ** licks lips, rubs hands together and cackles **

"What I love to see is when someone arrives on the scene and initially goes out there to buy stuff, and then, over time, gets the itch to express themselves more personally through their attire."

Exactly. Or even ends up somehow altering the thing they've purchased, to be their own. I read a quote recently that said "even a fake is an original, once it's been altered/repaired". (I'm paraphrasing-- this was some manifesto on buying good things and repairing them over time, rather than buying cheap replaceable crap)

So, I'm getting one of those belts, and she's a playa-goer and super helpful and quick to reply - she actually asks your fave colours and then sends you pics of matching fabric she has, for you to choose from!

      Anyways. I'm excited. !

The trick IMO is to balance between the fine line of being comfortable and not stressing on your attire, and being INSPIRED to decorate yourself without pressure! I mean, cmon, after seeing all the lovely costumes out there, who WOULDNT feel inspired to do the same? I had adifficult time my first year because I knew that in no way could I fit into the clothes that these ladies were wearing and I thougth I would never look as good as them, but that translated into inspiration to do my own thing at my comfort level. BMan is a great place to get inspired like that, as long as one isnt obesssing over looking the best and crying about it, theres nothing wrong with pushing a little costume creativity on yourself!! As long as youre having fun!!

While Im no fashionista on or off playa, I think that Leg Avenue and other "can get just about anywhere sexy fits" can only take the overall look so far (but it requires one to add onto whats there or do a bit of creative trimming/alteration). I have seen many people still be creative with stuff like that, adding onto what is already there and making it faboo..

Still, if you're too wide in bone structure or your body does not follow the proportions that the clothing industry, you are more inclined to make your own stuff whether you recycle a drab outfit and add onto it or (in the case of people like me who still cant sew right), find vendors like some of the aforementioned in this thread who like/can work with all sorts of bodytypes.

Playawear is like Burning Man as a whole. It is everything and nothing.....all at the same time.

Thanks for starting this topic! This is exactly the type of thing I'm looking for as well. I don't have the time to dedicate to learning how to sew this year. Or really even how to craft anything clothing wise but hope to learn in the future. Some people love creating costumes, others would rather buy them. Some people love creating art, others enjoy the experience of watching others creations. Others create home made shade structures, some buy theirs. Really, Burning Man is all about where you want to focus your energy.

Someone already mentioned it, but sockdreams.com has great stuff. Tights, garter belts, fishnets, hand warmers, etc for great prices. I think I heard about the site from this very tribe a long time ago, and have wanted to buy their stuff ever since. I'm happily awaiting the order to arrive at my door this week.

...I was kind of shocked to see the prices on some of those faux fur coats on a couple sites listed. I saw the $600 price tag and was like, holy shit! I thought I was reading the price wrong. I know they're probably not the easiest thing to sew, but my goodness, that's a helluva lotta dough.

julie - so true. we went to Prepare for the Playa in SF last weekend and while the wares were wonderful and obviously well made and great quality, the prices were through the roof... not that they shouldn't be for what was offered but honestly, none of it was anything my friends or i could afford. so off to the thrift stores we went. that is where i have my best success. but then again, i have a number of them nearby and am able to make multiple visits to them... pretty necessary in finding the good stuff!

              >holy shit! I thought I was reading the price wrong.

The fur can run anywhere from $25-60+ a yard, depending on the quality. Add into that, the damned things take HOURS AND HOURS to construct, and I can see the steep price tag. They ARE selling them retail, after all, and trying to make something beyond sweatshop-per-hour wages. (Ah, the eternal dilemma of local/community handcrafted vs. mass market junk you can buy from China, etc)

Yeah, it's steep. But, speaking as someone who's constructed one of the damned things once for someone, I sure as shit would rather just pay someone to do it if I ever wanted one (which I wouldn't...not into the RaverBear look....).

I wasn't commenting that they weren't worth the price, just that I would never pay $600 for a piece of clothing, no matter if it's designer or hand made. I know how expensive faux fur is, I've purchased a lot of it in the fashion district in downtown L.A. and that's just about the cheapest you can buy it. It makes me still wish I lived there, they have such great deals.

I also put together some playa coats for my boyfriend and I (www.youtube.com/watch My hope is to eventually help people out with custom clothing like my coats. people have been making some pretty cool steam punk goggles. I found them on ebay. The best ones are a little pricey, but they serve as inspiration to piece together your own from parts of vintage goggles & other things.

Thank you everyone for all your help! I'm definitely going to check out all those web sites. I might have missed the boat in terms of doing a swap meet or whatever. I also don't have much to contribute in terms of clothing. But the last two years I've gone, I've made due with thrift stores and Aardvarks. Aardvarks is a great store where you can find cheap stuff, even things like corsets and furry coats. I'm also on a budget, which is the other thing. At first I thought I would have more to spend, but it turns out I have to be careful. Anyway, thanks for all the great links and everything! I really appreciate it!

Burlington Coat Factory, if there is one near you, has some pretty neat stuff.

Full-length coats [not a huge selection, but they have 'em], faux fur coats [often around $100-], lingerie. Today I found metallic pants! They had bronze, purple, and turquoise.
