yes! i got the pattern and fabric ready to go.... i got McCalls M4975 :) i've seen it reccomended on here by a few of you.
right now my cat is enjoying a nice cozy nap on my faux fur bit, it is really comfy. i used it as a blanket the other night!
I have yet to go to BM, i really wanna make it for BM10. it'd be a dream come true! But so far i've been to TFus 2007, Afterburn 07, 08, Preheat 08, 09, and planning on Afterburn in nov this year :) maybe i'll have it nicely done in time, im sure i will. i know myself when i am determined to get something done, i get it done, quickly, esp if its something that'll make me feel and look fabulous haha. anywho. cant wait to be an owner of the famous "playa coat" cuz lord knows i dont have $350 and up to afford the coats i've seen online, even tho they are extremely nice. I'd rather spend that kind of money on camera equipment! i will post photos when i'm done!! :)

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 7:27 AMPlaya coats are my specialty so allow me to give you some friendly advice before you start. I reinforce all of the seams on the coats I make using double-fold quilt binding tape, this makes them practically indestructible.
Open up the tape and lay it down along the seam as you pin your pieces together. Sew along the fold line then fold the tape over and tuck the other edge so you have a smooth covering for your seam, then sew it up the seam again on the opposite side. This has a two benefits, 1) you're covering the seam so the fur isn't poking through on the edges, and 2) double sewing the seam with the binding means that your coat won't come apart at the seam.
I would also recommend using the long Chinese pins or long quilting pins to save yourself some frustration of trying to use regular pins through two layers of faux fur.
Pay special attention to which direction your fur lays when you cut and cut one piece at a time then flip the pattern over to cut the other piece. For example: lay out the fur right side down with the nap of the fur petting towards you, cut out one sleeve so the fur pets down the arm, flip the pattern piece over and cut the opposite sleeve.
Good luck! -

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 10:10 AMand cut out pattern pieces from fur FROM the REVERSE SIDE--cut only the backing and do not snip precious length and bulk from the fibers of the fur

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 3:58 AMthnx for the advice! much appreciated. however i won't be doing a fully fur coat. Majority of the coat is going to be a fleece. i have the fur for trimming along the coat and the wrist cuffs as well as the hood. and maybe some lining on the inside :) but i'll def keep in mind this advice for future projects :) thanks!!!

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 5:09 PMYou still want to be careful with cutting the fur so that you don't cut off the tips of the fur close to the edge. Remember that fur will hang down beyond the edge, as much as the length of the fur fibers. Just whacking into the fur can make it end up looking like a bad haircut. :)

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 7:57 AMAnd the hood for 4975 is really really huge -- I recommend taking a couple of inches off the total length of the hood piece. If you don't, the hood comes way down over your eyes and you can't see at all. FWIW -

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Wed, October 14, 2009 - 7:59 AMPS - I've never had a seam on a playa coat give way on me. I've only used the seam binding method for the shoulder seams of one coat that was particularly heavy. Otherwise, plain stitching will do fine.

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 4:00 AMgotcha! i understand what your saying....i do kinda want a big hood. but heres the fun part, i dont want just a regular hood, but a pixie style hood. the type that the hood goes way down the back side in a trianle shape. i havnt gotten started yet, but any advice on creating such a hood? :) thnx again!

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Thu, October 15, 2009 - 5:21 PMOops - my bad. 4975 is NOT the one with the giant hood. Looking at the pattern, it looks pretty normal-sized. FYI, I have this pattern but haven't actually used it yet.
To turn that into a pointed hood, you need to replace the back curved side with a big triangle. The further out you extend the triangle, the longer the hood. -

Thu, October 15, 2009 - 10:48 PMWhen cutting fur, I use a box cutter...it prevents from cutting into the fur and making it look choppy...

Re: planning on making my first real coat.
Fri, October 16, 2009 - 7:55 AMLeah, that seems to be the closest pattern for making a playa coat. However, since I like the long near-floor length, this pattern only requires a slight modification.
I sure do hope you make it to 2010! Stay determined!! -

The coat with the big hood is McCalls 4222, which was discontinued some time ago, but if you're lucky you can still find a copy (I found 2 at one local JoAnnes, none at any other store in the area). That's the pattern I used for my first coat, which was also my first time sewing fur, and my first time using a pattern :)
Can't wait to see pics!
