Where can I get a kilt, frevvins sake? They are freaking expensive. Used on eBay, upwards of a C note. Must be a supply / demand thing. Any suggestions on how to find a (used and well-worn) kilt with a 33 waist that doesn't cost two tanks of gas? Thx.

    No one "needs" a kilt....heh.

My advice would be to check thrift stores...do you mean a traditional Scottish-style kilt, or a Utilikilt? You'd have better luck if you're looking for Scottish-style (check the women's skirt section, you can often find kilts or kilt-like things there).

Kilts are very labour-intensive to make, and therefore are expensive. (I know, I've made one...total pain in the ass.)

Dude, if you have any friends in Europe (esp. Paris... or Ireland or Scotland I guess!) they would totally hook you up to thrift stores there. Kilts galore, at least in Paris.

    Or try making one.

Basically, go to a fabric store and find a plaid you like (screw tartan, that ish ain't cheap), then go find a strong belt. Then steam press some pleats into that plaid with an iron, tie it around your waist, cinch with the belt, and voila. I'm sure the pleating thing is harder than I made it out to be, but still.

It's much harder than you made it out to be. There's a lot of Math involved in trying to figure out how wide each pleat should be, how many you need, and also if you're going to taper it at the top (waist vs hips, some guys have a waist and some guys don't) for a decent fit. You also have to actually sew the pleats, if you press them they won't stay.
