Setting grommets with grommet pliers?

Hi all,

I've been making little outfit accessories for next year's burn since this year is not an option. I'm working on a pair of gauntlets re-fashioned from a skirt that didn't fit. I'm almost done except for this last step. I'm trying to put in four grommets on each gauntlet so I can tie them on. I have grommet pliers and am on the second package of 15 pairs of 1/4 inch grommets because the grommets aren't going on very easy. I have precut the holes and the grommets fit perfectly but when I squeeze the pliers closed to close the grommet, it looks like the pliers aren't clamping the inner piece down far enough to hold onto the other half of the grommet. Confused yet: :) Any help would really be appreciated as I feel totally frustrated. Thanks so much. 8>D

Yes, you need a grommet hammering system because the pliers apply uneven pressure and squash the grommets sideways. The Tandy Leather version do need bulk and non-stretch-ability, so load up the grommeting areas of the garment with interfacing before applying. The eyelets (one-piece hole thingies--grommets are the two piece dealios: eyelet plus washer) work pretty well as long as their shaft protrudes a reasonable distance from the fabric. IF the fabric is spongy or resists being drawn down into the fold-over eyelet roll, you will endure some frustration. Same goes for using a sized hole puncher for stretch fabrics....all you need is a pinprick and you have room for nearly any snap or grommet shank under the sun!
