What are some good places to get utility belts online? I've been looking and I saw so many cute ones at BM, but haven't been able to find any websites that have any decent ones.

Re: Utility belts
Mon, September 15, 2008 - 5:26 PMThe Podbelt people usually always have a Burner discount. They're Burner owned and operated.
www.podbelt.com/
(I'm not affiliated with them, I just have one)
Although, I never actually USE mine at Burning Man. Since I have a Camelbak for water strapped to my back, and it has pockets, I never end up needing a PodBelt. It just gets in the way. But it looks cool!

Email them and ask them for the burner code to get a discount!
Becareful about measuring, you want to measure it around your hips not your waist. -

Re: Utility belts
Tue, November 18, 2008 - 8:18 PMold thread, i know....but now that tribe has FINALLY let me log back in I'll add my 2 cents :)
I make my own and always have people ask about them. I usually just go to the thrift store and find a neat old pair of low-rise pants and cut the waistband area off, leaving a couple pockets attached (usually the right amount of space for a water bottle) and then go about sewing on other pockets I've salvaged from old cargo-style purses or other pairs of pants.. OR, you can buy one of those belts with the hundreds of eyelet holes in them and attach pockets or bags to those pretty easily (with heavy duty yarn looks good or with keyrings/carabiners).
Just some ideas... a little late for BM but there's always the next event ;) -

Re: Utility belts
Wed, November 19, 2008 - 9:58 AMYeah, HazMatt made a cool one for the burn out of some cargos. He put them on and I took a sharpie and drew a flattering ass line for him to cut at. Then he added duct tape details and grommetted the hell out of it. We have been going nuts with grommetteering! He made this strip of duct tape fabric just wide enough for the 3/8 two-part grommets to latch onto and strung it full of all sizes of caribiners. He even wrapped a fast food big cup with duct tape, grommeted that, and carabined it to the waistband utility belt.
I wish Happenstance or Eriijk had a pic to share of her utility belt she made for him out of a jean skirt waist band. She covered it with upholstery fabric and calico, and added matching flairs to paint splattered work pants. I never saw him in anything different all burn!

Fri, November 21, 2008 - 9:36 AMI like Jenny's way....
I've also made my own utility belts out of a canvas belt and old pockets and thrift store finds. It's fun to do, and tailor fitted too! :)

Re: Utility belts
Tue, January 13, 2009 - 11:29 AMI am a bit infatuated with one by Lululemon that was designed for taking your dog for a walk (yeah, whatEVER!):
www.lululemon.com/products/...pooch_lace
Its made of softer fabric so wears nicely on bare skin :). Has lots of pockets.
You might also look into the "leg mounted ammo pouches" you can find at military surplus stores. Milla Jovovich was wearing one in Resident Evil, and although I don't go for the gruesome killings and weaponry, the leg pouch was HOT.

Re: Utility belts
Thu, January 15, 2009 - 8:13 AMI have a "pod belt" but it's not from the company but was actually made by a lover of mine. The width is just slight wider than the brand version and the size was custom made to me. I have been wearing this belt for years. My motto is - once you go pod you don't go back. I own both leather utility belts and the rubberized pod. I've become most attached to the pod belt because of the production work I do. The belt lends it self to ritual abuse from active people.
Attached to my belt is this pouch. www.rei.com/product/757666 This pouch comes with a long loop that is meant to be worn around the neck. I cut off the loop and attached the smallest snap link I could find at the local hardware store. I make the pouch removable so I could easily slide on other things like my multi-tool pod.
www.hardwareworld.com/51-9876...AUL.aspx
This allows the pod to be removed. I have never had a pouch come off using these snap rings. They're great.
I work on playa before and during the event when means I carry more stuff with me - leatherman pod, main pod on right side, secondary pod on left which can hold larger items like goggles, and a radio. Additionally I have double snaps hanging off the exposed D-rings so I can quickly add and remove gear. www.divegirl.net/ss-double...-p264.html
The main pod from REI I love. It has multiple zippered pockets inside and out, and a couple open pockets that are perfect for phones, PDAs etc for off playa use. I never carry a purse anymore and I've stopped losing things.
You have to plan to be in party mode. Early on establish a habit of always using this pocket for ID and money, this pocket for other essentials. Etc. If you are religious about how you organize your stuff in your pod you won't loose stuff even when you are intoxicated. Yay for muscle memory.
Rule number 1 though: Don't take the pod belt off. If you are off partying and you take the pod belt off then you forfeit the benefits. Happened to me once at a party. Luckily the belt was found and nothing had been taken.

Re: Utility belts
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 2:45 PMI'm in the process of collecting old backpacks, purses/pouches, and jackets from the thrift shop.
I'm taking all the trippy pockets and making a utility vest.
I'm adding a snap on spine protector (used in extreme sports) that will double as a camelback/backpack.
Many extra loops, velcro, and clips for add ons.
Grommets with laces down both sides to adjust size. (loose over other garments, tight when alone or under)
I might even make a little chain mail for the shoulders. (how to on youtube)
Oh yeah, I live in the mountains, so I'm pulling a waterproof hoodie from an old jacket with snap on coyote fur for extra snowy days.
I already have my utility belt with leg drop pouches. Holds my pocket survival guide and bushcraft elements.
I really don't like backpacks. Too cumbersome. Too much "digging". You gotta put em down to play hard.
This way my "backpack" is spread all over my body and I don't lose anything.

They have gunbelt inspired pieces that are very well designed, visually appealing, and fun.
I got mine for a GREAT deal when they were having a pre-burning man sidewalk sale! -

Re: Utility belts
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 4:22 PMIf you want something really cheap, consider taking some rope and tying it in a series of coin knots, thus creating all kinds of loops to hang stuff on.

Re: Utility belts
Wed, April 15, 2009 - 5:39 PMI saw the cutest belts on a couple in LA this past weekend. They took a pair of old jeans that were slightly LARGER than their own waist size pants and cut off the waistband and several pockets. Totally cool...I only wish I had taken a picture...

Re: Utility belts
Wed, April 22, 2009 - 10:28 PMI created my own "burner belt" with a 1.5" leather belt with two large brass rings incorporated into the belt that I picked up cheeeap at a flea market (I later saw the "Michael Kors" stamp on the buckle), a leather bejeweled handbag I found in the Nordstrom Rack sale bin, and a couple of caribiners from REI. I sometimes swap out the bejeweled leather purse for a sportier canvas pouch with sequins on it. Any small handbag with large rings where the carry strap is attached works great for this, and it's as stylish as the next cute bag I find on sale.
